Mexico one of six teams competing in first FIL U19 men's tournament

March 1, 2016

COQUITLAM - Mexico is one of seven teams that will compete in its first under-19 world championship in July in Coquitlam.

Playing in the five-team Red Division along with three other newcomers to the U-19 tournament - Israel, Hong Kong and Taiwan - and returnees Germany, Mexico is one of 16 teams in the 2016 FIL world men's Under-19 lacrosse championship in British Columbia from July 7-16.

Tryouts were held in December at Instituto Politécnico Nacional. Mexico has participated in several past FIL competitions (Manchester in 2010, Denver in 2014) at the senior men's level. They also captured the first-ever America's Cup in 2015, beating out Colombia, Argentina and Chile at the senior men's level.

Jose Luis Espinosa Núñez is the head coach for Mexico.

"We hope that by having an Under-19 national team that this will grow the game all the way to the youth level," said Mexico team representative Santiago Diaz.
